Home is a Safe Place

Samuel Goldwin, the powerful chief at MGM, once called his staff together after six straight box-office flops and said, “I want you to tell me exactly what’s wrong with me and MGM, even if it means losing your job.” Well old S.G. could have used a few classes on how to motivate employees.Threatening people is not exactly the best way to build a healthy atmosphere or good relationships within a company.

Kids need strict fathers . . . who know how to lighten up and have a good time. Kids don’t need dads who are wound up so tight that everyone around them walks on eggshells, waiting for them to snap.  There are enough people walking our streets with a short fuse. Your kids don’t need the added stress of coming home and wondering about your next blowup. Standing tall means working hard to make your kids feel safe around you.

Wild West Discipline

There was once a judge in the Wild West who had the strange custom of offering condemned criminals their choice between hanging and the big black door.  When the day of execution arrived, the judge went to the prisoner’s cell and presented the option.  “What will it be,” he would ask, “the rope or the big black door?” Of course, he never explained what the big black door was.  Not knowing what was behind the big black door, virtually every condemned criminal opted for the rope.

A sheriff once asked the judge what was behind the big black door.  “Freedom,” said the judge, “but they need to have the courage to try the unknown before they find out.”  Few men are brave enough to choose the option of the unknown.

A good father knows that discipline and firm restraint become the door to lifelong freedom for his children.  Standing tall means modeling courage for your kids, especially when the future is uncertain.
