Love of Country
The prophet Elijah loved his country, but he couldn't stand what was happening to it. So Elijah decided to take a trip to Jerusalem to speak directly to King Ahab. We don't know how he got there or how he got past the guards to see the king. Ahab must have been shocked to see Elijah standing before him. You see, God had had it with Ahab in the worship of the false god Baal. Elijah was the man God could trust to deliver the message to Ahab.
Yet Elijah knew that Ahab and his wife Jezebel had executed every other prophet who had stood up to them. Never the less, Elijah plunged ahead in the face of, what seemed to him, to be certain death. Elijah spoke the truth. Elijah took a stand. He was not going to allow the moral corruption all around him to go unchallenged. Elijah was one of God's men, and you can be the same today.

Old Testament history
If you're a husband and father, you are leading your family in a culture that is screwed up morally and spiritually. So where do you go for guidance? How about the Old Testament? By recording the life and times of the Old Testament kings, God has given us a roadmap to help us pick our way through the rubble of a collapsing society.
Reading the Old Testament can encourage us to take heart. While all that was spiritually and morally good around them was falling apart, there were men of God who did not cave in. Instead, they held their families together. When others were letting popular culture color them, these hearty men of God colored their culture. Old Testament history teaches us that in every age God has his men. Be one of God's men in this time of increasingly moral and spiritual decay.
